Frequently Asked Questions...
Is it legal to keep indian pottery that i found in my yard in debris after katrina?
An archeaolgist told me they are precolumbian museum quality pottery from 800to1200A.D. How do i know if its legal to keep them,if it is,how do i find what their value is? Im not a collector and i know nothing about artifacts.
Answer:
Contact an appraiser from Sotheby's or any other appraisal firm, they can tell you if any museum or anyone owned it, by law it "finders keepers". However, if they tell you it belonged to a museum I'd hope you'd give it back. If it is unowned they would tell you how much it would fetch at auction and you can consider auctioning it or offering it to museums to not have to pay the commission at auction.
