Essential Maintenance Tips For Speed Boats by Victor Epand
If you have purchased a speed boat you obviously want to know that it will last for a long time. Proper maintenance is the key to keeping your boat in good shape. While the manual that came with your boat would be the best place to start when it comes to maintenance, there are some maintenance tasks that are common to all boats. Keeping up with these tasks will help your boat stay in good condition. If you neglect these tasks you may end up having to make costly repairs.
There are certain things on your boat that should be checked each year, these things include the oil, lower end fluid, and drive oil as well as all filters. If the boat spends a lot of time in saltwater, change the zincs every year and have the boat bottom painted. This will not only keep the speed boat looking like new, but also clean the fiberglass and remove barnacles and debris.
Winterizing the Engine
Winterizing the engine is essential, especially if it will exposed to cold and/or damp weather. The engine should be flushed with water. Once the engine is drained, drain all fuel from the carburetor and hoses so evaporated fuel does not build up. Once the engine is clean and dry, lubricate the cylinder walls and pistons and apply water resistant grease to all the other moving parts. You should use a high quality wax to polish the outside of the engine.
Other Winter Maintenance
The fuel filter and water separator should be replaced each year to prevent clogs. Before winter sets in make sure the fuel tank is full and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent condensation build up and deposits. Bilges can be cleaned with hot water and a stiff brush, then dried before being sprayed with lubricant and antifreeze. It is also a good idea to thoroughly clean the boat both inside and out to prevent buildup during the winter months. When storing your boat for the winter it should be covered completely to protect it from the winter elements.

It is also important that you refer to your boat manual for specific procedures and maintenance concerning your boat. Taking time to care for your boat can save you money in costly repairs. Inexpensive but very fast speed boat / motor combo's -?
I have been trying to think of some different make/model speed boats made in the past say 25 years which had the highest power to weight ratios', were extremely well made/strong hulls, and would go very fast with a decent size outboard (100-200hp range for example). I was obviously looking used, but still in very nice shape, very fast, and very reasonably priced now on the used market. Some ideas I had were the old Glastron speedboats (like the model used in Jamss Bond film), the great old Checkmate speedboats (which I think had problems with transom cracking sometimes), and someone else mentioned looking at "Skaters" also. Anyone recomend some makes/models I could look at in this class? Something between say 16' and 26', lower the HP needed to go fast the better, but I'd really like to find something that would hit say 60-80mph top speed if possible. Thanks for any ideas !!

60-80 MPH is not real fast, and you should easily be able to attain those speeds for about $5000-6000 with a used boat. Look around for a 16-17' ski boat style with about 150 HP. For instance, a 16' J-Craft with a Merc XR-2 150 HP will do about 65 MPH with a full load of fuel and 2 people. An 18' Charger with a Merc bridgeport will run about 70-75 MPH. As with any used boat, if you do not have the knowledge and skills to completely check out the boat and motor, take it to a reputable tech for an inspection.
