Aircraft Desinsectacion
Desinsectacion is a Spanish word for disinsection. Disinsection is a method of removing insects like mosquitoes, fleas among others by using, mechanical gear, chemicals or measures of sanitation. This process is mostly conducted in aeroplanes where it involves spraying inward bound international aircrafts for insects and diseases. Spraying of passengers' aircraft compartment with insecticide is common in some countries in South America, Australia, Africa and the South Pacific when passengers are present. This is done to get rid of insects like mosquitoes to avoid importation. This process was employed for the first time in the 1930s but its use is being reduced due to the bad effects it has on passengers and crew. The insecticide used is specialized for aircraft and has no lethality. Desinsectacion pesticides may result in allergies for some passengers and crew.
The desinsectacion process has been striving to be safe by the World Health Organisation ( WHO ). This process is permitted under the international law to protect the environment, public health and agriculture. World Health Organization, and the International Civil Aviation Organisation, lay down 2 techniques of aircraft desinsectacion. The first methodology is to spray the airplane cabin using an aerosolized insecticide when the passengers are on board. The other technique involves treating the airplane's interior surfaces using a leftover insecticide while the passengers are not on board.
There is a report done by the Informal Consultation on Aircraft Disinsection bankrolled by WHO, which concluded that if the process is done correctly under the specifications, it would not be dangerous to human health. The report Nonetheless, pointed to the fact that some people may experience passing discomfort following aircraft disinsection by aerosol application.
Not so many countries require aircrafts to be disinsected. Most countries though still hold the prerogative to do so and as such, could enforce a desinsectacion obligation should they identify a real threat to their environment, public health and agriculture. It is very important for travelers to check with their travel booker or airline booking agent while booking a flight. This way they get to know what pesticides are being used at the time to avoid allergies and other health issues from chemicals they are allergic to.
There are areas that World Health Organisation has made mandatory for desinsectacion to be carried out. These elected areas are territories that mark a high risk of certain diseases being spread by insects like dengue fever and malaria. This requirement was laid out in the International Health Rules ( 2005 ) and was amended and published by World Health Organization. The requirements are being implemented by the public Health Aircraft Rules. Failure of an airline to carry out the process might lead straight to prohibition to take off till a remedial desinsectacion is undertaken.
